Metafont is a language and a program, developed by Donald E. Knuth,
allowing the design of fonts of type
with parameter controlled typefaces.
The primary Metafont-reference is
Donald E. Knuth, The Metafontbook, Reading, MA, etc., 1986.
Not by itself, but in practice, the use of Metafont
seems to be strongly coupled
to the use of the
TeX typesetting system.
Net sites with TeX information mostly have Metafont information too.
Linux contains a version of the Metafont software.
